Teaching reading literacy through inquiry and information problem solving using the Internet: effects on teaching and learning

ABSTRACT Despite the growing use of the Internet as a source of information for learning, few studies have focused on developing strategies to teach the skills of reflecting on and evaluating the contents and structure of the texts found online. In response to this, we designed and tested a method for teaching reading literacy based on an adaptation of the Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) method, using inquiry-based teaching and information problem-solving on the Internet. The method was evaluated using a pre-experimental design with two experimental groups involving four teachers and 180 seventh-grade students in Chile. The data were collected using a class observation protocol and a set of tests to evaluate the students’ knowledge. The results show that the method is effective in enabling students to develop the skills of evaluating and reflecting on the contents and in improving the quality of teaching.

Using Wikipedia to Develop 21st Century Skills: Perspectives from General Education Students

Purpose: The aim of the study was to find out how and why students use Wikipedia and what their attitudes are towards Wikipedia as a source of information for learning. Methodology: The article is based on a quantitative study in which 381 Estonian school children participated in filling out an online survey. The questionnaire included both multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Findings: Statistical analyses and responses to open-ended questions showed that students often use Wikipedia as a primary source of information, but that their use of the site for learning tasks is guided by teachers’ attitudes and perceptions towards Wikipedia. Students perceive Wikipedia as a quick and convenient source of information but are uncertain about its reliability. Under teachers’ guidance, they have learnt to search for information and to be source-critical, while more attention is needed to develop academic literacy, including both text comprehension and text composition. Value: As there is still very little research on how Wikipedia is used for learning purposes in general education schools, the results of the study contribute to further discussion on the potential of Wikipedia as an innovative teaching tool for different subjects.

Multiple Myeloma Patient Perceptions of Minimal Residual Disease Testing

Background Minimal residual disease (MRD) testing is a valuable tool for detecting residual malignant cells in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. MRD negativity has a strong predictive power and is linked to favorable outcomes in various diseases and treatments. However, not all MM patients are aware of this testing method or whether it could be integrated into their disease management. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness and perception of MRD testing in MM patients. Methods HealthTree® Cure Hub for Multiple Myeloma, an online portal for patients with plasma cell dyscrasias, was used to conduct a 10-question survey to investigate the awareness, use, and opinions of MRD testing for MM patients. The statistical analysis was performed with R, R Studio, Knitr, and LaTex. Chi-square and T-Tests were used to evaluate if responses were different between patients confirmed to have had or not had MRD testing. Alpha was set at 0.05 with a two-tailed test. Results A total of 635 patients from HealthTree Cure Hub answered the survey from September 30th 2022 to October 31st, 2022. Of the total participants, 486 were diagnosed with MM (83%), and most of them were reported as being in remission (60%). Validated medical records were available for 289 patients allowing for a comparison between patients confirmed to have had MRD testing (MRD-tested patients) and those that have yet to use the test (MRD not tested patients). From the sample of MRD-tested patients (114 patients), 81% of patients correctly identified that they had had an MRD test, while 19% did not know they had an MRD test or were unsure. These results corresponded with the number of patients (14%) who reported being slightly or not familiar with the test. In contrast, in the MRD not tested group (177 patients), 60% of patients correctly reported they never had an MRD test, but 40% incorrectly reported they had had an MRD test or were unsure. In this latter group, 30% of patients reported being slightly or not familiar with the test. As expected, MRD-tested patients reported to be more familiar with MRD testing (5-point Likert scale: 3.8±1.2 v. 3.2±1.2, p < 0.001). In general, the test was more useful in increasing patients' confidence (81%), making decisions about the therapy (73%), and planning their future (52%), than getting off treatment (24%), and saving money (24%). Both groups had similar results. The majority of MRD-tested patients who reported being familiar with the test, found it to be useful (99%) and would recommend it (90%). The top sources of information about MRD for MRD-tested patients were the doctor and care team (63%) and their own research (46%), in contrast with the MRD not tested group, where the top source was their own research (67%) and advocacy support groups (e.g. HealthTree, MMRF) (35%). Patients that were not familiar with the test answered that they were interested in learning more about MRD (100%), similar to patients that are already familiar with the test (90%). Finally, the top two sources of information for learning about MM were the doctor/care team (89%) and patient support/advocacy groups (e.g., HealthTree, MMRF) / online community (78%). Conclusions This survey investigated MRD testing awareness, usage, and opinions among a large sample of patients with MM. More than half of the patients lacked MRD testing usage or knowledge, and 30% of the validated cohort had incorrect knowledge of their MRD status. Nevertheless, among patients familiar with MRD testing, a high proportion found it useful and would recommend it to others. Moreover, a considerable number of patients reported interest in learning more about MRD testing. These findings underscore the need for increased awareness and understanding of MRD testing among patients with MM.

РЕКРЕАЦІЙНА СКЛАДОВА ЕКСКУРСІЙНОГО ТУРИЗМУ УКРАЇНИ В УМОВАХ ВОЄННОГО СТАНУ: АНАЛІЗ ТА ПЕРСПЕКТИВИ

The article examines the main characteristics of the recreational component of excursion tourism in Ukraine, including its tourist sites and their unique features. It analyzes the problems that arise in the recreational component of excursion tourism in conditions of a state of war. These include the destruction of cultural heritage sites, environmental disasters, and threats to tourist safety, all of which pose significant obstacles to tourism development in such circumstances. Furthermore, the article investigates the role of the conditions of a state of war and their impact on the recreational component of excursion tourism in Ukraine. It highlights the restrictions on access to tourist sites and the threats to the safety of both tourists and local residents. The article delves into the analysis of facts regarding the destruction of cultural heritage sites and tourist infrastructure, as well as the irreversible damage inflicted upon natural resources, such as national parks, reserves, and environmentally sensitive areas. It establishes that pollution of the environment and loss of biodiversity often occur in times of war. The article places special emphasis on the opportunities and prospects for the development of the recreational component of excursion tourism in Ukraine during a state of war. It explores various strategies and innovative approaches that can contribute to the growth of tourism in conflict situations. The importance of strengthening mechanisms for tourist safety, developing alternative routes, and leveraging modern technologies to attract tourists is underscored. Collaboration with military structures and the promotion of environmentally sustainable tourism are also highlighted as essential factors. Ultimately, the article provides an analysis of perspectives and offers recommendations for the development of the recreational component of excursion tourism in conditions of a state of war in Ukraine. Its findings serve as a valuable source of information for scholars, practitioners, and stakeholders interested in the advancement of tourism in conflict situations.

Validation of newly developed tasks for the assessment of generic Critical Online Reasoning (COR) of university students and graduates

In recent decades, the acquisition of information has evolved substantially and fundamentally affects students’ use of information, so that the Internet has become one of the most important sources of information for learning. However, learning with freely accessible online resources also poses challenges, such as vast amounts of partially unstructured, untrustworthy, or biased information. To successfully learn by using the Internet, students therefore require specific skills for selecting, processing, and evaluating the online information, e.g., to distinguish trustworthy from distorted or biased information and for judging its relevance with regard to the topic and task at hand. Despite the central importance of these skills, their assessment in higher education is still an emerging field. In this paper, we present the newly defined theoretical-conceptual framework Critical Online Reasoning (COR). Based on this framework, a corresponding performance assessment, Critical Online Reasoning Assessment (CORA), was newly developed and underwent first steps of validation in accordance with the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. We first provide an overview of the previous validation results and then expand them by including further analyses of the validity aspects “internal test structure” and “relations with other variables”. To investigate the internal test structure, we conducted variance component analyses based on the generalizability theory with a sample of 125 students and investigated the relations with other variables by means of correlation analyses. The results show correlations with external criteria as expected and confirm that the CORA scores reflect the different test performances of the participants and are not significantly biased by modalities of the assessment. With these new analyses, this study substantially contributes to previous research by providing comprehensive evidence for the validity of this new performance assessment that validly assesses the complex multifaceted construct of critical online reasoning among university students and graduates. CORA results provide unique insights into the interplay between features of online information acquisition and processing, learning environments, and the cognitive and metacognitive requirements for critically reasoning from online information in university students and young professionals.

The diaries of important historical figures have always been a great source of information for scholars. Giulio Andreotti was one of these. A world-famous Italian politician involved in many Italian and international events. His diaries have recently been published in Italy. The author has read them and carried out a careful analysis of them. They shed light on many Italian and international events. In this article the author has limited himself to considering what these diaries say about the attempted coup that took place in Italy in 1970 organized by Prince Borghese. The author presents the results of his analysis and some final considerations also valid for the present time.

Emotion as Information in Early Social Learning

The majority of research on infants’ and children’s understanding of emotional expressions has focused on their abilities to use emotional expressions to infer how other people feel. However, an emerging body of work suggests that emotional expressions support rich, powerful inferences not just about emotional states but also about other unobserved states, such as hidden events in the physical world and mental states of other people (e.g., beliefs and desires). Here we argue that infants and children harness others’ emotional expressions as a source of information for learning about the physical and social world broadly. This “emotion as information” framework integrates affective, developmental, and computational cognitive sciences, extending the scope of signals that count as “information” in early learning.

Measuring the association between students’ exposure to social media and their valuation of sustainability in entrepreneurship

Currently, university students can read content from various social media sites; however, little is known about the relationship between students' social media exposure and their valuation of sustainability in entrepreneurship and of environmental and social care as drivers of new venture creation. This research seeks to reduce this knowledge gap, evaluating discrepancies among undergraduates according to the intensity of their social media use. An online survey was applied to compare students’ perceptions based on their reading of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. A total of 143 valid responses of students in business and engineering careers in Chile were analysed using the Mann-Whitney test, showing a difference in the perceptions of undergraduates who read social media content once a day or more. The results show that a higher frequency of reading such content is related to higher perceived relevance of environmental sustainability, social welfare, and fair trade; likewise, it is linked with less perceived importance of sustainability as a driver of entrepreneurship. This evidence is relevant in recognizing the potential of social media sites to strengthen the higher education in sustainable entrepreneurship because these channels can be incorporated as a formal source of information for learning and its use is still limited. Future research should explore what specific types of content have the most significant impact on perceptions of sustainable entrepreneurship and promote particular methods for their application in this area.

Sustainability and Impact Study of Patent Literature for Scholarly Communication

A patent is an important source of scholarly information and forms a link for scholarly communication in any discipline. The role played by and the influence of patents on scientific invention and innovation has become integral part of R&D, Product development, marketing and many scientific and commercial activities. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the citations for the popular journal called Scientometrics available in the patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This study provides an overview on the importance of patent citations to scientific journals and provides the citations from the patents available in the USPTO database for Scientometrics Journal, a journal in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS) and Scholarly metrics. This study identifies to what extent the articles from the Scientometrics journal are used and cited by inventors of the patents in the USPTO. We analyzed the patent citations to Scientometrics. The results show that the total number of core patent citations to Scientometrics journal papers on the USPTO were 53 out of 64 retrieved results. The technical papers (or technology-oriented papers) related to various scientific, technical, the World Wide Web, and search engines published in Scientometrics journal attracted more citations from patents.

Sources of Information for Learning and Decision-Making in Men With Localized Prostate Cancer.

Information seeking is essential for effective patient-centered decision-making. However, prostate cancer patients report a gap between information needed and information received. The importance of different information sources for treatment decision remains unclear. Thus, using the Comprehensive Model of Health Information (CMIS) framework, we assessed the antecedent factors, information carrier factors, and information-seeking activities in localized prostate cancer patients. Data were collected via semistructured one-on-one, interviews and structured survey. Men with localized prostate cancer were recruited from two urban health-care centers. Following the interview, participants completed a survey about sources that were helpful in learning about prostate cancer treatment and decision-making. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and subjected to a thematic analysis using NVivo 10. Fifty localized prostate cancer survivors completed the interviews and surveys. Important antecedent factors that were observed were age, marital status, uncertainty, anxiety, caregiver burden, and out-of-pocket expenses. We identified complexity, magnitude, and reliability as information carrier characteristics. Preferred sources for information were health providers, medical websites, and pamphlets from the doctor’s office. These sources were also perceived as most helpful for decision-making. Urologists, urological oncologists, and radiation/radiation oncologists were important sources of information and helpful in decision-making. Prostate cancer patients obtained information from multiple sources. Most prostate cancer patients make patient-centered choices by incorporating personal factors and medical information. By considering factors that influence patients’ treatment decisions, health-care providers can enhance the patient-centeredness of care. Multiple strategies and interventions are necessary for disseminating valid, reliable, and unbiased information to prostate cancer patients to facilitate informed decisions.

Instructional Technology: Teacher’s Initial Perception of TPACK in Physics Learning

The demands of learning in the industrial era 4.0 currently have an impact on innovative learning, learning design with the Technology Pedagogic and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework provides a useful framework for teachers and researchers to integrate technology in learning activities. The TPACK (Technological Pedagogic Content Knowledge) framework is the latest issue that is relevant to 21st Century learning concepts. This study aims to examine the extent of teacher responses in utilizing learning information sources using TPACK priority scales in encouraging student learning abilities. This study used a quasi-experimental study analytic test of the randomized design with questioner testing. The concept of the approach is through two methods, namely, qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research subjects were carried out randomly with a target sample of physics teachers in the category of new instructors from several provinces in Indonesia, with 33 active respondents in their fields. Based on the results of the study, TPACK is an essential point to give the powerful managing of educational learning and field studies show that the teacher states that some obstacles are experienced when integrating technology in learning physics at school to make sure instructional technology.

Design and Implementation of a Novel Hybrid Rental Apartment Recommender System

Recommender Systems (RSs) have become an essential part of most e-commerce sites nowadays. Though there are several studies conducted on RSs, a hybrid recommender system for the real state search engine to find appropriate rental apartment taking users preferences into account is still due. To address this problem, a hybrid recommender system is proposed in this paper constructed by two of the most popular recommendation approaches — Collaborative Filtering (CF), Content-Based Recommender (CBR). CF-based methods use the ratings given to items by users as the sole source of information for learning to make a recommendation. However, these ratings are often very sparse in applications like a search engine, causing CF-based methods to degrade accuracy and performance. To reduce this sparsity problem in the CF method, the Cosine Similarity Score (CSS) between the user and predicted apartment, based on their Feature Vectors (FV) from the CBR module is utilized. Improved and optimized Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) with Bias-Matrix Factorization (MF) of the CF model and CSS with FV of CBR constructs this hybrid recommender. The proposed recommender was evaluated using the Statistical Cross-Validation consisting of Leave-One-Out Validation (LOOCV). Experimental results show that it significantly outperformed a benchmark random recommender in terms of precision and recall. In addition, a graphical analysis of the relationships between the accuracy and error minimization is presented to provide further evidence for the potentiality of this hybrid recommender system in this area.

Martial arts and combat sports theses and dissertations indexed in BASE database: a bibliometric approach

The doctoral thesis is one of the most valued productions in a researcher’s career. They are also an important source of information despite they are usually considered as grey literature due to their limited distribution. The aim of this work was to perform a bibliometric analysis of martial arts and combat sports (MA&CS) doctoral or postdoctoral dissertations indexed in the Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE) database. A comprehensive MA&CS terms list and search strings were entered manually in the database search engine. Duplicate references were removed and obtained documents were filtered for meeting inclusion criteria. Selected references were then exported to Endnote X6 for classification and to Excel 2016 for bibliometric analyses. A total of 457 theses focused on MA&CS, published from 1951 to 2019, were retrieved. The last analyzed decade collected 64.55% of total documents and judo was the most studied MA&CS, with 90 documents. We conclude that MA&CS theses and dissertations are an important source of information for scholars and academics, especially since the amount of them has considerably increased during the last decade at the international level.
